John's story
John says that living with a foster carer has changed his life for the better.
"My carer was always involved with what was going on in my life and looked out for my best interests," he said.
"He was both a friend and a parent figure to me. He also set boundaries for me. At first I hated it, but now I understand why I needed them and realised having boundaries changes your life for the better. If I didn't have boundaries, then I would have gone off the rails. If I didn't have the relationship with my carer, then my life would have been shit. I now have respect for myself - and for others."
John first came into a foster home about three years ago after not being able to live with his parents due to behavioural issues. He has now been able to work through his personal issues plus have a better relationship with his parents.
John said he has received many positive things from being in care - including the motivation to achieve and the carer becoming a good friend.
"When I first started to live with him, I didn't know much about him. So I urge other teenagers to give their carers a go and not to give up when you first move in. It takes time to get to know them," he said.
"My carer has changed my life in such a positive way. If you knew me before I went into care, and know me now, then you'd know what a difference my carer has made to my life."
